What is Gynecomastia?

The term gynecomastia means woman-like breasts, and it's actually a very common condition. Gynecomastia is identified in men who exhibit a combination of excess fat and glandular tissue on the chest. In some cases, this tissue is sensitive. Men and boys are often self-conscious about gynecomastia and frequently hide it or even gain weight to make it less noticeable.

What causes Gynecomastia?

Although physicians have linked it to hormonal changes, drug use and even diet, the definitive cause of Gynecomastia is unclear. How does male breast reduction work?

During surgery, Dr. Ellen would remove fat and glandular tissue from your chest area. This can be achieved through an incision near the nipple, where the doctor employs techniques such as liposuction or excision (removal with a scalpel). For removal of significant tissue, a general anesthetic is required. Minor procedures can often be done with local anesthesia and sedation.

How long is the surgery and recovery period?

A typical procedure can be complete in about one hour. Most patients return to work within one week, but exercise should be postponed for at least three weeks. Dr. Ellen can give you specific instructions for your recovery period. Your chest will be wrapped in gauze and tape after surgery. As the swelling subsides, you'll be able to see the initial results, but it may be 3 months before you can appreciate the final outcome.
