Surgery to Increase Breast Size

You might be a candidate for breast augmentation if you have:

  • A smaller breast size than you would like
  • Loss of fullness in the breasts over time
  • A noticeable degree of breast asymmetry

There are many reasons to consider this procedure. For many women, the choice is made simply because they desire the cosmetic enhancement that comes with large breast size. If you're considering breast augmentation, a woman-to-woman consultation with Dr. Ellen in Birmingham can assist in your decision-making process. Before you schedule your appointment, read these common questions about breast implants.

Common Breast Implant Questions

The following are some of the common questions patients have when considering a breast augmentation. You can also submit your own questions using our online contact form, and our staff will handle your email in a timely manner.

Which is the preferred breast implant: saline or silicone?

Both implant types have a record of safety and success in breast augmentation. The latest silicone gel implants are highly advanced, with a cohesive property that wasn't available in previous years. Patients prefer silicone gel for its natural consistency, which closely mimics real breast tissue. Saline implants are ideal for minimally-invasive surgery techniques, including implant placement through the underarm or through the navel. Patients also choose saline implants for their lower cost and lighter weight.

How does Dr. Ellen surgically insert the breast implant?

During breast augmentation, the doctor can insert an implant using one of several techniques. The most common technique is called the inframammary incision, which is performed in the breast crease – where the breast meets the chest wall. A short incision allows Dr. Ellen sufficient access to insert the implant. Alternatives include placement through the underarm, around the nipple or through the navel. After the incision, the implant can be placed above or beneath the pectoral muscle.

Which doctors are qualified to perform breast augmentation in the Detroit area?

The most qualified doctor to perform your breast augmentation is a board certified plastic surgeon. To read more about credentials and training for plastic surgery, visit plasticsurgery.org

How much time is needed for surgery? How long is recovery?

A typical breast augmentation can be completed in under two hours. You will be able to walk around within 24 hours, but full recovery time is one or two weeks. If necessary, stitches are removed in about 10 days.

What are the risks of breast augmentation?

Like any surgical procedure, breast augmentation has risks to consider. During your consultation, Dr. Ellen will review risks of surgery, so you can make an educated decision. Risks include, but are not limited to, capsular contracture, infection, hematoma, implant rupture and poor aesthetic results.
